'The English Roses' is richly illustrated with images from some of the world's finest garden photographers, including Howard Rice, Andrew Lawson and Ron Daker.

Ninety English Rose varieties are included in this book - half of them new. They are presented as a gallery of exquisite Redouté style photographs.

David Austin's personal descriptions of his varieties make illuminating reading.
David Austin explores fragrance, which he considers to be 'the other half of the beauty of a rose', analysing the delicious scents found in the English Roses.

Roses have one of the most complex, widely ranging perfumes of all flowers. The weather conditions on the day before the rose opens, the age of the flower, the season and even the time of the day all influence the fragrance of an individual bloom.

In the second edition of this superb book, published in 2012, David Austin tells you everything you need to know about roses - an excellent book for both the enthusiast and the beginner.

David Austin dedicates a chapter to his own breed of roses - the English Roses. This new edition includes details of 18 additional roses, including 'William and Catherine' which was named to celebrate the Royal Wedding in 2011.

The book is lavishly illustrated throughout with colour photographs showing individual varieties, as well as roses in different garden situations.
The rose has been the most popular garden flower in most of the Western world for centuries and in the first part of the book David Austin explores the history of the development of the rose.

He explains why he believes the rose has always enjoyed such popularity and includes various examples of roses featured in works of art (see left) and in literature.
There are chapters focusing on each of the major rose groups: Old Roses (see left), English Roses, Hybrid Teas and Floribundas, Small Roses, Species Roses, Shrub Roses, Climbing Roses and Rambling Roses.

Towards the back of the book, there are also chapters offering practical tips on how to use roses in the garden, in the home and on their cultivation.
