How to Plant Rambling Roses Up Trees

Rambling roses are an impactful addition to any garden, especially when they clamber up trees, creating a romantic and wild display. Planting rambling roses up trees may seem challenging, but with the proper techniques, you can achieve a beautiful and spectacular result with ease.

Climbing Compatibility

When planting a rambling rose up a tree to create a beautiful combination of height and colour, it's essential to consider their compatibility, since they will be together for a long time. Carefully assess whether the tree can support the growth of the rambling rose and ensure that the chosen tree provides optimal conditions for the rose to thrive.

Light is crucial for growing rambling roses up trees; if the rose receives minimal to no light, it will not thrive. Choose a tree with light around the base and an airy canopy to give the rose the best conditions to climb.

Size of Tree

Rambling roses can be grown on a variety of different-sized trees, from humble fruit trees to majestic oaks. Choosing a vigorous, rambling rose is vital when growing a rose up a tree. This will ensure the rose is robust enough to withstand the sometimes challenging conditions it may face when planted.

It is also important to always choose a rambling rose that is a suitable height for the tree. Do not be tempted to choose a large, rambling rose for a fruit tree, as this may swamp and damage the tree. Conversely, if you are planting a rambling rose up a large tree, make sure the rose will be large enough for maximum effect.

Planting a Rambling Rose

Positioning

If possible, plant the rambling rose on the side of the tree that receives the most sunlight. Dig a hole approximately 3ft (1m) from the tree trunk.

Preparation

Preparation is crucial when planting a rambling rose, as there will be two sets of roots vying for water and nutrients – the tree and the rambling rose.  In the planting hole, work the soil and add soil improver, taking care not to damage the tree's roots.

Planting

Plant the rose at an angle towards the tree and sprinkle the roots with mycorrhizal fungi. Fill in the planting hole with soil improver or compost, and if possible, spread a layer of mulch to lock the nutrients and water in.  Water generously and moving forward always keep the rose well-watered to give it the best start in the first few years.

Once established, your roses will begin to climb and entwine with the tree’s branches, creating a breathtaking display of colour and fragrance. Gently tie the rose stems as they grow using soft garden ties to help train them and create an appealing shape whilst they establish themselves. Apply a granular rose feed in March and keep well-watered.

Growing roses up trees is a rewarding project that requires patience and care but yields spectacular results.
